Miguel Escobar was an infamous drug lord, as well as one of the most wanted criminals in the United States, being wanted in at least seven states for drug trafficking and murder, before being captured by the San Francisco Police Department in 2005.
In 2005, Miguel Escobar ran through the districts of Chinatown, and attempted to evade Captain Leland Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Randy Disher, presumably due to a crime he had committed. He attempts to evade arrest by holding a woman hostage, although due to quick thinking from Stottlemeyer, he was disarmed. Upon being arrested, one of the Chinatown locals quickly recognized him, which resulted in the SFPD gaining some fame for capturing him.
However, the SFPD's fame was short lived when the FBI, via Special Agent Lapides, told them to hand over Escobar. Stottlemeyer was reluctant due to the fact that the SFPD had convicted him of a local crime, but nonetheless heeded the request, babysitting him until the extradition hearing, and then head over to the court house. While putting him on guard, Escobar, while requesting a bathroom break, cryptically hints that he'll soon "go free."
Unbeknownst to either the feds or the SFPD, Escobar had anticipated the possibility that he'll be arrested, and had his girlfriend kill and replace one of the jury candidates, an elderly orthopedist, at the courthouse he was due to be transferred at to federal custody. His plan, however, was unraveled by Monk who had been on the Jury at that time and managed to deduce what was going on, with him being arrested along with his girlfriend during their attempted escape due to Stottlemeyer intercepting their escape route.
- Miguel Escobar's name is presumably a reference to Pablo Escobar, who was a figure of similar notoriety and had a similar profession of being a drug lord, being considered the father of narco-terrorism. Unlike Pablo, however, he was never killed.
