Dr. Conrad Gould was a director of the Medford Psychiatric Institute allegedly murdered by the patient Bill LaFrankie, who was blamed for having a desperate drug addiction issue to the point of having killed Gould to gain access to the pharmacy's inventory. After his death, Morris Lancaster was made the newly appointed director of the hospital.
Although LaFrankie was claimed to killed Gould, Monk and a fellow patient John Wurster have expressed suspicions about Gould's death; LaFrankie was eventually found dead, but the murder weapon in Gould's death was not found anywhere on his body, as well as the pharmacy's keys still being found in Gould's pockets. After investigation of the murder, Monk discovered the truth was that Gould and LaFrankie were murdered by the incumbent director Lancaster. Lancaster had murdered Gould out of jealousy for his promotion to directorship, which he sought himself, and had casted the blame on LaFrankie after having him severely drugged to the point that he would die. Eventually, Gould would be later avenged when Monk has Lancaster arrested with thanks to Sharona.
